Perambalur district has an area of 1752 sq.km and it consist of one Revenue Division of Perambalur, 4 Taluks of Perambalur, Kunnam , Veppanthattai and Alathur, 4 Panchayat Unions and 152 revenue villages. It is bounded on the North by Cuddalore and Salem Districts, South by Tiruchirappalli, East by Ariyalur District, West by Tiruchirappalli and Salem Districts.
North East monsoon is the major source of rainfall for the district and the annual average rainfall stands at 861 mm. It has horticultural crop area of 10535 Hectares, in which vegetables (83%) occupies major area and followed by Spices (8%), Fruits (4%), Plantation & Medicinal crops (4%) and Flowers (1%).
In general, Perambalur district has specifically known for Onion cultivation and it is cultivated in an area of 7000 Hectares. The local variety of small onion bulbs which is similar to CO 4 bulbs are cultivated majorly by the Perambalur district farmers that shows good quality in yield & appearance and long shelf life during storage period.Apart from Onion, Tapioca (1625 Ha), Turmeric (395 Ha), Acidlime (295 Ha) and Banana (230 Ha) are the major Horticulture crops that are cultivated in the district. The blocks namely Alathur, Perambalur and Veppanthattai were major vegetable growing region.
