Theni District is considered as one of the horticulture wealth districts in Tamilnadu. Being situated in Cumbum valley,surrounded by Western Ghats. Theni district has Various agro climatic condition like Tropical, Sub tropical and Temperate for raising different kinds of Horticulture crops like Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, Spices, Plantation crops, Medicinal and Aromatic plants are cultivated both in plains and hilly tracts of the districts. Mango, Banana, Grapes are major fruit crops. Plain vegetables and Cole vegetable are cultivated considerably in all blocks. Cumbum Valley is a major centre for grape production with 4,000 small farmers producing over 90,000 tonnes of Muscat grapes, locally known as panneer dhrakshai, and about 10,000 tonnes of Thomson seedless grapes. The unique feature here is that the grapes are harvested throughout the year, while in most grape growing centres else where the season ends with summer. Spices like Cardamom, Pepper are cultivated in Bodinayakanur Block. Bodinayakanur is a major market place for cardamom, coffee, tea and black pepper. This city is also called "Cardamom City" because of the large quantity of cardamom trade in this area. It has an auction centre for cardamom. Coffee, Tea plantations are grown in Megamalai, Kurankani hilly areas. Periyakulam block produces large amount of Mangoes. Cashew nut, Moringa are major crops of dry tract of Aundipatti, Myladumparai blocks. In total about 62,570 ha of area covered by various Horticulture crops in this district.
