Sivagangai District Profile
The district of Sivagangai was formed as a separate district in the year 1985 as a result of division of Ramanathapuram district. The district of Sivagangai, with an area of 4468.11 Sq. Km, is situated in the south eastern portion of the state. It is bounded on the north by a small portion of Tiruchirappalli and Pudukottai districts, on the east by the district of Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram, on the south by the district of Ramanathapuram & Virudhunagar and on the west by Madurai district. According to the notification, there are Nine taluks in the district, they are Devakottai, Ilayankudi, Kalayarkoil, Karaikudi, Manamadurai, Sivagangai, Singampuneri, Tiruppattur, and Thirupuvanam.The district constitutes 12 blocks and agricultural divisions. As regards to the hierarchy of administrative arrangement, there are three municipalities, 11 town panchayats and 437 village panchayats in the district. Sivagangai region is has scattered fertile soil and completely with less fertile red soil. Paddy, groundnut, black gram, coconut and sugarcane are the major agricultural crops cultivated in the district. With regards to horticultural crops banana, mango, cashew nut, guava and chillies are major horticulture crops grown. Other major horticultural crops seen in the area are tomato, brinjal, sapota, aonla, tuberose and tamarind.
