Ranipet district has favorable agro climatic condition for raising different kinds of Horticulture crops like Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, Spices, Plantation crops. The total geographical area of the district is 184140.5 hectares and the net sown area is 44431.381 hectares which constitutes 24 % of the total geographical area of the district. The area under Horticulture crops is 5062.09 hectares which occupies 11 % of the net sown area.
Ranipet has a tropical climate suitable for tropical fruits, Vegetables and flowers. Of this more than 60% of the area are rainfed and the balance area are catered through irrigation sources viz wells, canals and tanks. There is absence of surface water irrigation in the district. Efforts are initiated by the department of horticulture to increase the area under horticulture crops by way of irrigation through drip system.
In this district, major crops grown like Fruits (Mango and Banana), Vegetables (Brinjal, Bhendi, Chilli, Tomato, Greens, Colocasia, Gourds, Beans and Lab Lab), Flowers (Jasmine kinds, Tuberose and Marigold), Spices (Turmeric and Tamarind) and Plantation (Coconut) in terms of coverage of area and production.
State Horticulture Farm Navlock is located on the Eastern Bank of the river Palar in the Avarakarai Village near Ranipet of Walaja Taluk. The total area of the farm is 211.06 acres which is established in the year 1981. The farm is very approachable since it is situated near Bangalore to Chennai National Highways (Visharam) and 16 kms from Katpadi Railway station.
